Bruce Kumar FRANTZIS BIOGRAPHY
Bruce Frantzis has almost 40 years of experience in chi gung, healing practices, meditation and martial arts. Fluent in Chinese and Japanese, he has drawn on sixteen years of intensive study in Asia to develop a systematic approach to teaching Taoist energy arts.
In 1981 Bruce Frantzis was accepted as one of the two disciples of the late Taoist Sage Liu Hung Chieh. Prior to becoming a Taoist Lineage Master, Liu had been declared enlightened by the Tien Tai School of Chinese Buddhism. Some time later, Liu officially adopted Bruce Kumar Frantzis as his son in a traditional ceremony. For several years, BruceFrantzis studied chi gung, tai chi, hsing-i, ba gua and meditation daily with Liu in Beijing.
In 1986 Liu formally passed his lineage to Bruce Kumar Frantzis and empowered him to teach Lao Tse's Water Method of Taoist Meditation, a practice virtually unavailable to Westerners.
Twenty years of prior training provided a foundation to prepare B. K. Frantzis for Liu's teachings. In 1961, at the age of twelve, B. K. Frantzis began his comprehensive study of the martial arts. He earned black belts in judo, karate, jujitsu and aikido by the age of eighteen. For more advanced training he moved to Japan, where he also had the opportunity to spend two years studying with Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of aikido.
Following his training in Japan, B.K. Frantzis spent two years in India studying advanced yoga and Tantric practices and then he went to China.
Bruce Kumar Frantzis studied acupuncture and worked as an apprentice chi gung therapist and tui na body worker in Chinese hospitals and clinics. In 1981 he was certified by the People's Republic of China to teach the complete system of tai chi chuan, the first Westerner to be awarded this honour. K. Frantzis spent a total of eleven years in China studying with some of the greatest masters in Hong Kong, Taiwan and Mainland China.
Following the death of Liu Hung Chieh, Bruce Frantzis returned to the United States in 1987. He now teaches in various parts of North America and Europe and writes books about Taoism. He advises universities and corporations on setting up courses and research programs in chi gung and Taoists arts.
